With the Inkwell - Till the Grave
One Ramadan, about 1200 years ago
Fell upon Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal- a great sorrow
Lashed nearly to death
While fasting almost to his last breath
For standing up to the Mu’tazillah
On the Abbasid Khalifah’s grand stage
Imprisoned-he still wrote to share his knowledge
While the righteous warden snuck out each page
Qalam in hand - even in old age
We can’t forget that statement he made
“With the inkwell to the grave”
An ummah indebted to him for contributions to fiqh and hadith
he gave
A scholar who sacrificed the skin off his back
For a blasphemous statement about Quran he refused to say
So that this ummah’s beliefs wouldn’t stray
from the prophetic way
