Hijama (Cupping)

What Is Hijamah/Cupping?

Hijamah or better known to Westerners as Cupping, is also sometimes called the lost Sunnah by Muslims today. Hijamah/ Cupping comes in two main forms: dry and wet. Wet cupping is the form that you will find when Muslims speak of Hijamah. The "Wet" is referring to the blood that is let out with the aid of the suction from the cups. "Dry" cupping is using the suction cups but no blood is let out.

Hijamah /Cupping Is Not New

Middle East: Hijamah was prescribed by the Prophet Muhammad saws and has been used for well over 1,000 years by Muslims.
Egyptians: Used cupping which has been verified by documents dating back to 1550 B.C.
Chinese: Cupping has been a part of traditional Chinese medicine for centuries
Native Americans: I spoke to an Osceola tribesman in Florida who told me that their tribe has always used bloodletting as a way of cleansing. They would make small cuts on the legs and other areas.

Why You Need Hijamah

We are bombarded with toxins from our food. For the most part, we live a sedentary life style in the west. Poor diet and poor exercise leads to a build up of toxins. Even when we eat vegetable and fruits, we are ingesting chemicals. Many can't afford to buy organic. Even of the organic produce, there is some skepticism if they are truly safe. Traditional medicine in the West is reactive and unfortunately a system that thrives on keeping us sick. Even the medicine/ cures they prescribe us in fact leave us with side effects requiring us to use yet another prescribed "medicine." For this reason, it has become imperative that we seek out the natural cures which essentially aid the body's natural healing process. Hijamah, herbs, exercise and healing foods are the way to healing and detoxifying. `

Islamic Connection to Hijamah / Cupping

The Prophet of Islam, Muhammad saws used hijamah on several parts of his body. He used it on his foot after a sprain, on his hip for pain, on his head for a headache as well as between his shoulders to detoxify his body.

"Hijamah is the most helpful procedure for human beings to cure themselves." Saheeh
"Indeed, the best of remedies you have is hijamah." Saheeh
"Indeed in hijamah there is a cure." Saheeh Muslim
During the Night Journey (Israa wal Miraj), Muhammad Saws was instructed by the angels, "Oh Muhammad, enjoin your ummah (people) to do hijamah." Saheeh

Is Fear Holding You Back?

First I have to say I understand the process may sound scary. You might be concerned that it will hurt. I'm sure pictures you see of the procedure don't look comfortable. I had all the same apprehensions which is why although my co-worker and friend had been suggesting to me for 2 years to get it done, I didn't go. Once I got up the courage to try it out, I was so regretful on what I've been missing out on. The experience may feel different from one person to the next but I will tell you about my experience. I felt elation. I felt as if a part of me was floating away, a part I no longer want to hold on to and it felt great. I have had hijamah done 4 times now this year and I've never experienced any paid. The incisions are actually more like scratches. The last 3 of my hijamah sessions were with an experienced professional (Sister Ghaniya) in Valley Ranch, Texas who has a very gentle touch, the highest sanitation standards and a wealth of knowledge regarding hijamah and health maintenance in general. My first time was also with an experienced professional. Their office is located in Frisco. They have a facility which can accommodate men and women. It is actually a family owned business. The wife treats women only and the husband treats men only.

What to Expect with Wet Cupping

Your experience can vary from place to place but in most professional settings, this is how it will go. First there is some form of intake where you may have to fill out a form mentioning your basic medical history and current issues. You will likely have a face to face consultation before the hijamah session where they will explain the procedure to you as well as speak to you about your health concerns and goals.

You'll be given a hospital gown which opens in the back to they can have open access to that area. You will either lie all the face down on a massage table or sit in a massage chair with your back and neck exposed. The hijamah practitioner will sanitize the area. Then they will put the suction cups on your back in specific places.

Your hijamah practitioner may inform you that the first time you receive wet cupping, your body may not allow much blood to flow. After the suction cups sit on your body for a few minutes, they will be removed and small, very superficial incisions will be made. These incisions feel more like very light scratches because they are really just at the very surface of the skin.

Care Afterward Your Hijamah

It is recommended to use black seed oil to care for your hijamah points afterwards. Make sure to buy some prior to your visit. You simply gently rub it on your incision areas afterwards. Over the next few days you will feel thin scabs grow over your scratches/incisions. These will go away and there is no scarring left. You may feel tender in those areas the first 24 hours. Just wear soft clothing and try to avoid tight straps in that area. If you must wear something with a strap just loosen it a little bit and you should be fine.
